Muffin Tin Monday: Flowers Abloom

I am doing my first Muffin Tin Monday! I chose "Flowers Abloom" as this week's theme, since the hydrangeas I planted in my flower garden are finally starting to bloom! And that makes my little green thumb happy! Lots of pinks, purples, fuschia and green, green, green!

Top Row: Flower-Shaped Cookies, Apple "Flower," Flower Candies
Bottom Row: Buttered Flower Pasta, Peanut Butter Bread Tulip, Yogurt w/ Flower Sprinkles

I was so excited to find this fun, cute blog, Muffin Tin Mom,
which gave the greatest idea to get Waylon to try new foods! Serving food to kids in a muffin tin. Genious! He gets excited every time he sits down to eat! Plus, it gives me a chance to be creative in the kitchen. I am linking up, and you should, too! Stop by and join in the fun!

Our First GeoCache

Back in the fall, while Eric was still deployed, he found a new hobby:

GeoCaching

What is geocaching, you say? And how do you pronounce it? First, it's like cash, as in Johnny Cash. And it is this crazy, treasure-hunting good time for adults! Peopl
e all over the world set up points, called caches, and hide them in water-proof containers, then log them onto www.GeoCaching.com. The latitude and longitude are given, and sometimes hints, as well. This information can be downloaded onto your handheld GPS. After you drive to the general location, you get out and walk around until you find it. Yes, you tend to get some funny looks, but that's ok - you're on a treasure hunt! Some geocachers get really creative with their hides; leaving clues to another location, making a timed effort to find another, or just plain making their cache really, really hard to find. So, if anyone else out there is a geocacher, let me know. We found our first one last night. Here's the pics to prove it:

(Click on the picture to see that it's actually not blurry, haha.)

Happy GeoCaching!!!

*Those were some of Eric's Christmas presents this year. A handheld GPS & hoodie, he can now wear proudly. :)*

Pork Tenderloin Fail

Since the hubs has been home, I have been trying my hand at cooking more often. It's hard to really cook-cook, when it's just you and a toddler for a year. That's a lot of leftovers! So, I was excited to try my hand at the hubs' choice of pork tenderloin and baked potatoes. He chose a tenderloin that was already marinating in spices, so I just followed the cooking instructions and made dinner. Baked potatoes are easy. Made them before, and will make them again. Not hard to mess those up. So, we ate dinner, and it tasted so good. Totally wished I could have taken credit for the flavor, but I just did the heating of the oven, opening of the package and setting of the pan into the oven. Oh well. It was still good.

*Note - this is not the one I made. This is a LOT prettier, haha!* (Source)

Then, about an hour later - the tum-tum started to hurt. I will spare the details, but I can say, with total certainty, that I will no longer be cooking pork tenderloin in this house. Hubs was fine, of course! Even ate leftovers the next day. Ugh... Hopefully, my next jaunt into cooking won't fare so bad for the tum-tum.

I've Been Challenged

So, the hubs has issued me a 7-Day Challenge...and it's 3-fold, dangit! Here's the details:

The 1st Part - No Soda
He has this weird fear of what the carbonation is doing to the inside of our bones. He stopped drinking all soda before Christmas and would like for me to do the same. I stopped drinking it last year, but just started drinking sweet tea instead for the caffeine. I'm doing Weight Watchers, and sweet tea has points, while diet soda doesn't. So, I had started drinking diet soda again. Ugh! Now, I'm really going to have to savor my moments of sweet tea goodness! Thanks, hubs!

The 2nd Part - Walk 6 miles
You might think - wow, he's a jerk. But, no, I actually started a walking club, the Concrete Crushers, about 6 weeks ago and have yet to win for the most mileage in one week. Kinda pitiful, wouldn't you say? Haha. Plus, we have been doing more things together as a family, like walking and bike riding, and Waylon really loves his wagon rides. As long as it's not raining, I can make 6 miles happen. Who am I kidding? I have a treadmill...it can happen even if it rains all week. No excuses for me. :)

The 3rd Part - No Sweets
Seriously? This was the worst. I have the biggest sweet tooth, especially for chocolate. I {heart} Hershey's! I don't understand people who don't like chocolate. Like, what is wrong with them? Honestly. This part of the challenge made me immediately angry. Usually, if I cut things out, it is one at a time - not soda and sweets on the same day! But, then we agreed that we could make all-natural sweet treats that have honey as the sweetness factor, instead of processed sugar. Ahh...my sweet tooth calmed down a bit.

So, did I accept this challenge? Yes. The hubs even offered an incentive of my own choosing at the end of the 7 days for completing the challenge. He said to start out small, and we can up the ante with the next challenge. The next challenge? Oy vey!

Now, I have to come up with an incentive for completing my challenge. I was thinking a $5 or $10 gift card to a fun store. And he can't just give me the money - he actually has to go out and give me the gift card. Sweet Satisfaction! Hmm...where to send him for my gift card. Any ideas?

*Note - I did forewarn him that bitchiness might rear its ugly, little head this week. He has been warned.*

Concrete Crushers Week 6

The results are in my little Concrete Crushers, and the winner is:

Shannon
with a mileage of 4 miles!!!

Awesome job! Keep up the good work, ladies!
Let's CRUSH it next week with a goal of 5 miles!

Daisy Mae Button Earrings Tutorial

Here it is, folks...my first tutorial...and we'll see if it won't just be my last, haha. I've been making lots of items for my Etsy shop, so I thought I would show how I made one of the pairs of button earrings that I recently listed. It is so easy to make, you'll think to yourself, "I could do that." Yeah, you can...but you just may not have the time. I've got lots of time on my hands, people. So here goes...

How to Make "Daisy Mae" Button Earrings

All that's needed for this project are pictured above: a hot glue gun (I used one with a high heat setting), the glue sticks (can't do much without those!), a cute pair of buttons and earring backs. These supplies were all purchased at Hobby Lobby (as it is the only craft store in town).

The first step...argh!...first tutorial FAIL...did not show cutting tool in supplies photo.
Buy one of these tools, too, which I don't know the name of. I bought a mini jewelry tool set, that came in a 3-pack.

Alright...moving on. I used this tool to
clip off the small, rectangular stem that was protruding from the back of the button. This gives it a flat surface to glue to the earring posts in the next step.

The next step is to put a dot of hot glue on the earring post and affix it to the desired position on the button. I held the button to the earring post for 30 seconds and then let it sit for awhile before moving it around for pictures.

And VOILA! There you have a cute, little pair of daisy button earrings. (The button holes kind of look like eyes, so they look like happy, little flowers, too.) Perfect to pair with a summer dress or for a little girl's earring collection!

Wasn't that super easy? Now, appreciate that you can make them yourself, and go buy them from my shop, haha! Just kidding...kinda! Happy Crafting, Y'all!

I'm linking up at Tatertots & Jello & Flamingo Toes!

Red Top BBQ

Eric and I have been talking since he got home about really wanting some good barbecue. Our go-to place in town, Golden Rule, closed down pretty abruptly during his deployment, so we were on a quest to find a great place that specialized only in BBQ! Having barbecue chicken off the back of a menu at a regular ol' restaurant just doesn't cut it sometimes. This past week, we went for a little drive into the country in Kentucky, just to see what we could see. When we drove through the blip of a town, known as Guthrie, we saw two BBQ joints, that looked down-home and "real". Today, we tried out the first of the two, Red Top BBQ, and I am happy to say that it did not disappoint!

From the outside, it looks like a sit-down restaurant, but ended up being an order-at-the-counter type place with hard booths to sit at. If the atmosphere didn't impress, the food sure did! I had the chicken plate, which served about half a chicken, and two sides. I chose hash brown casserole and broccoli and rice casserole. Yes, you can get these kind of items at other places, but this food tasted like it came out of a Southern woman's kitchen.

And if you've ever had food in a Southern woman's kitchen, you know you're eatin' good! I'm pretty sure everyone at the table was pleased with what they ordered. Waylon didn't eat much, but was pleased as punch about his Yoo-Hoo we ordered him. He drank it like it was going out of style! So, if you're ever in Guthrie, KY, be sure to stop in at Red Top BBQ. You will be glad that you did!

Ohhhhhh......yeah!

I just went shopping at

and you know what that means...

Crafting Time!

I see so many fun projects in my future:

Necklaces...Bracelets
Rings...Earrings
A Canvas for our Family Wall
Rigging a Cute Basket to My New Cruiser
Some Mod-Podging

Some of these things I will be doing for the first time (like the Mod-Podging), so I foresee some slight screw-ups and sticky fingers. But, that's ok. I got puh-lenty of stuff to experiment with and play around with. And I plan for quite a bit of it to go up in the shop.

So, yay for shopping and yay for crafting!

My 30th Birthday

Aw, it's Papi R holding a very teeny tiny Baby Bri in the hospital.

I actually wasn't teeny tiny - I was a 9 pounder, but that was nuthin' compared to Baby Waylon,

who was a whopper at 9 lbs. 15.5 oz. all these years later!!!

Aw, One-Year Old Bri getting into her first birthday cake!

Too cute, if I do say so myself! And I do! :)

I hoped you enjoyed my little jaunt down memory lane, back to when I was just a wee tot, making my way in this world. Here's to this new venture into a new decade, with hope for lots of great things to come my way.

Life is what you make it...I plan to make it good!

Happy Birthday to Me!!!

Concrete Crushers Week 5

The figures are in for last week, and we have a new winner:

Shannon
with a mileage of 7 miles!!!

Awesome job!
And a great new goal for the rest of us to meet!
Keep it up, ladies!

The Cocktail Incident

Or "Just Another Reason Why Toddlers Need to Sit in High Chairs at a Restaurant,

Instead of Booster Seats."

Follow me on this journey...

After a fun, slightly drizzly after-hours event at the Nashville Zoo, the families K and M decided to rest their weary bums at the Roadhouse of Logan's. The odd happenings at the zoo earlier in the evening had been explained away by late feeding times, but Mama M would soon come to believe that those animals were foretelling of strange events to come. Beautiful macaws don't just fight; zebras in captivity don't find the joy to run free about their enclosure in a spritely manner; flamingos don't walk up to zoo members looking for food, only to find they have a camera in hand and then take their picture with said camera.

No...something strange was in the air in Nashville...and only the animals knew what the families were in for...

When the host of the restaurant offered immediate seating, the families were relieved to have no waiting time. Although they had requested high chairs, this table could not accommodate the chairs, but booster seats could be used in its place. The host insisted that the children would not be able to get out of the seats, and Mama M thought to herself, "Getting out is not the issue - sliding down into the abyss under the table and knocking teeth out on the way down is." But, they decided to try it out. The families K and M were welcome to the challenge. Fools. This would be interesting.

If only they had listened to the animals...

Baby K decided the booster seat was not for him. And that was that. Baby M tried it out, but as Mama M had thought; he kept sliding down and out of the seat. To prevent busting of his chin or chipping of his teeth, because nobody likes to see blood at a table for dining, Papa M made the decision to remove the booster seat from under Baby M's bum. Thus began the standing and walking and looking out the window at cars passing by.

When the waitress took the orders for the table, the family M ordered their dinner, as they had not yet eaten. The family K was just going to order dessert, as they had eaten some type of wild fare at the zoo for dinner. The waitress took Mama K's order, Baby K's order, took their menus and walked away without getting Papa K's order. Papa K and the rest of his tablemates were stunned! How could she forget to take an adult's order? What was she thinking? Mama K and the family M tried to get him to stop her and mention it, but he was oddly cool.

Had the zoo fare prepared him for the disasters the Roadhouse of Logan's had in store?

After the family M and two-thirds of the family K enjoyed their food (Papa K filled up on peanuts - anyone sense an odd elephant-type kinship here?), they sat around talking and laughing about the evening, their children and themselves. Who doesn't enjoy a good laugh? Most of the dishes had been cleared away by their ever-observant waitress, and they were just talking the night away. Baby M had a pee-pee incident, and Baby K almost had a puke incident. Good times with good friends.

But, then the coup de gras...

Baby M spotted a small bowl of cocktail sauce that had come with Mama M's food, but that she hadn't touched, because she thinks it reeks of ickiness. He must have thought to himself, "What isn't there to love? It's a pretty red color, in a nice white bowl." And in that thought, he reached over Mama M, grabbed the bowl and proceeded to shake it up and around the two of them. Mama M tried to shield herself from the stinky sauce, but to no avail. Drops landed on her shirt, right where she could smell them all the way home.

Baby M had quite a bit more sauce on him. A large glop landed smack on his forehead in the area above his left eye and all over his shirt and hands. The moment the sauce landed, both the families K and M were stunned for about a second. Baby M seemed frozen, as if he had thought the red stuff in the bowl were just a bit more solid than it turned out. Then, the laughter erupted, and the clean-up began.

And thus, became the story of why toddlers need to sit in high chairs at a restaurant, instead of booster seats.

*Note - No zoo animals were harmed in the writing of this story*

I SPY: Handmade

I am linking up again with Little Miss Momma for this week's I SPY: Handmade Edition. Unfortunately, as I walked around my house, I realized I didn't have as many handmade items as I would like. *Note to self - must invest in more, quality handmade items.* I do have some projects in the works, but none that are photo-worthy, so here goes...I Spy...a custom "Pieces" frame designed by Shea Ingram Frames to match our rustic, earthy living room decor. You can find her beautiful custom frames here and here. Don't worry! If they are not headed to an event near you, they will ship to you! She and her husband are just the nicest people. I enjoy buying handmade, quality items from great people, and they are the greatest!
I Spy...my son's Western bedding made by none other than my mom. (Yay for creative moms!) She has always had a way with that sewing machine of hers, so when we decided on a Western theme for his room, I asked her to make his bedding (and curtains). That way, we were able to buy all sorts of random pieces for his room, instead of working with a set and trying to match it. She did a great job, and the room is absolutely adorable. When we upgrade to a twin bed in the (near?) future, I will be sad to pack it away.
I Spy...the closest I get to sewing...those heat-bond, ironing strips. Ha! I wanted to spruce up the shower curtain to match our Hawaiian decor, but not with flowers or surfboards. I bought the material, which looks great with the gecko photos from Hawaii and the rest of our guest bathroom decor. I think it has a breezy, laid-back feel to it, and I really like it. Plus, it adds some textured color to break up the green of the shower curtain, the teal of the walls, and the plain green and coral towels. I rule.
I Spy...bracelets for my Etsy shop that I made. I really dig the turquoise and pearl bracelets. I just need to finish off the ends and tie the pretty little bows around them, and then they will be complete! I am really hoping that this venture into Etsy helps with our adoption fund. If having tons of ideas for little girl accessories is a sign of good things to come from it, then I think so. :)
I Spy...my one true creative love...scrapbooking! Can you consider it handmade? I do. I've been doing them since high school. I've made them for my family, as well. I love to scrapbook! These are from Waylon's first year, which I need to finish. His second year has already come and gone, and we are almost halfway into his third! Yikes, Bikes!
Well, I hope you enjoyed this little jaunt into the handmade parts of my home. Like I said before, I am definitely intrigued by how little we have that is handmade. Really makes me want to dig in and get my hands dirty, painted or get my fingernails chipped in some sort of creative process to beautify our space. While writing this, I remembered a quilt from my grandmother made by a Catholic Charity in California, that I have. A bunch of little old ladies would get together to quilt at their church, and every year, my Brown Granny would send for some. And you could always be sure that the little old ladies would accidentally leave some of the needles in the quilt, and you would only find them when you got poked in the leg or bum. Handmade...good times. Or the fence around my vegetable garden that my husband threw together last year with no plans, just some wood and chicken wire. I guess we do have more handmade things than I thought, but I still see more projects on the horizon!

My New Cruiser

How excited am I? We got bikes! I got this super cute cruiser! Is it not the cutest bike ever? Mint green with white wall tires. And I'm totally getting a wicker basket for the front. I've got to have a place to put my water bottle (hydration is key), my cell phone (although, it is a retro bike, and they didn't have cell phones back then), my id (I just realized my little mini-purse matches my new bike!), etc. Ooh, and my camera! Always have to have my camera with me! You just never know when a photo op will present itself. And I got this super cute helmet. (Safety First!) Mint green bike with a pale pink helmet - Stylin'! Eric got a mountain bike, of course. I tried to talk him into a cruiser, but he's not into looking like a girly-man, haha! And Waylon got his cushy little pull-along cart, so he can chill with his juice and a dinosaur or two and enjoy the ride. I'm so excited for our first bike ride! Hopefully, it will be today. I do have to say I was super-inspired to get my cruiser, because of *Bitch Cakes* and her passion for riding her Hello Kitty Beach Cruiser. Granted, she does live in NYC, and they have way more sidewalks than we do in my town, but she makes it seem so fun and glamorous. Come on, riding in skirts and heels? Love it! And love her! Yay for biking!

Mother's Day

Since the hubs has gone off to reintegration for the morning - no, the Army does not pause for Mother's Day - I figured I would write a quick post about why I love being a Mommy. Or in particular, Waylon's Mommy, since he is my one and only...well, for now at least.

One reason is for sure his laugh. I have never heard a better sound in the world, than Waylon cracking up at something. And it's infectious; there is no way I can keep myself from laughing, when he gets me going.
Which leads to another reason - his super-sweet smile. He has the cutest little smile, with the cutest little teeth, and when he smiles, his eyes crinkle up just so...ah, he's so cute! But, who doesn't think their kid is cute? I know, I know, I'm such a mom, but I've got to play the "My kid is super cute" card. :)

And he's really sweet. He asks if I'm ok, if I cough. Or, poor baby, when I accidentally ram his head into a display table at Old Navy, which leads to some serious crying, in the middle of me comforting him, and feeling like THE WORST mother in the world, he says "It's ok." Like a brave little soldier, with those big ol' crocodile tears in his eyes...

His little arms hugging me around my neck, witnessing his funny, determined, little run, watching him explore his little world, questioning why in the world he wants to bring his miniature broom along with us in the wagon for a walk in the neighborhood. He boggles my mind at times and then leaves me completely breathless with my love for him. Day by day, it seems my heart grows for him, more than I ever could have imagined.

And it's not perfect. I'm not the perfect Mommy, and I'm sure that we will have our fair share of "moments," as he gets older. But, for now, he's my baby, and I'm gonna wrap him up in my arms and love on him as much as possible. So, for all the other mommies out there - enjoy your day - you deserve it! And don't forget to call your mom!

Happy Mother's Day!

Daddy's Home!

Yay! We got to welcome our soldier home from Afghanistan this week! It has been so nice having Eric home, watching him and Waylon play together, getting to actually talk to him in person and everything else that's nice about having your family together and complete. Even the little things, like getting to go to Subway for sandwiches together. It's nice having your spouse to talk to over lunch and not just your toddler. Now I'm off to get Waylon out of his Daddy's gear (velcro name-tapes are just way too fascinating!), and get ready for Eric to come home from reintegration. We shall see what adventures are in store for all 3 of us today!

Sneak Peek!

I've just finished about 20 necklaces for my Etsy shop. I'm so excited to get them up there, so we can (praying) start making money for our adoption! I am just waiting for our next sunny day here in Tennessee, so I can get some nice, natural-light shots of the necklaces. Until then, here is a sneak peek of some of what you will see, when you peruse the shop on Etsy. You can also click on the link on the right. And yes, I will get a pretty banner up in the shop, soon!

Aren't those too pretty? You know you like them! And I don't blame you!
How could you not like them with names like:

Antique Chandelier

Those are some fabulous names with just a bit of kook - I love it! I will post an update when they are up in the shop. Umm...Happy Shopping? Yay for shopping! :)

I SPY: Shoes & Jewelry

I am excited to be doing my first I SPY! I am linking up with Little Miss Momma for the fun & festivities, albeit a little late. Sorry, ladies! I hope y'all enjoy a sneak peek into my closet to see some of my favorite jewelry and shoes.

I recently organized my jewelry, while my husband was deployed. Before, it was just a big ol' mess! I bought an open-wood frame from Hobby Lobby, some muslin material and had the gals in the frame shop there staple it across the back for me. Perfect for an earring display!

I love silver rings, or white gold! I never wear yellow gold. I think the only pieces I own are from my family from when I was younger, that I consider keepsakes. (The ring holder, was a stacking ring toy for my son. When the wooden toy rings started getting lost, I re-purposed it for my rings!)

I love bracelets!!! So easy to add to an outfit! I have bracelets from Hawaii, the bazaar in Afghanistan, the Houston Rodeo (the one on the bottom - a large bangle bracelet, Mod-Podged with vintage Rodeo gals - quite possibly my favorite), and of course, Claire's and other stores. Oh, and I re-purposed a paper towel roll for those babies to rest on. You're welcome, Earth.

Necklaces! There is a turquoise necklace I got from my husband for Christmas, a Lisa Leonard Designs piece, an Allora Handmade rosette necklace, and a ribbon necklace with a wooden cut-out of Africa made by Debi Jenkins, who is fund-raising for her Ethiopian adoption. As my wardrobe has become more earthy, I am trying to incorporate similar-colored jewelry, as well.

Yes, those are Billy Idol record earrings. I love him; I have his tattoo on my back (not him tattooed on my back - his tattoo - long story); I met him a couple times; he kissed my cheek; we have a history. I say history completely sarcastically. :) No, I did not wear those idiotic earrings when I met him. They are just for fun. I found them on eBay. Where else? Haha!

The pearl necklace and holder were my grandmother's. Nothing silly about that. It's just pretty.

There is my crazy collection of bangle bracelets. Almost 30, and still holdin' on. I know...

And yes, those are slap bracelets...from like 1991. And yes, it is New Kids on the Block. And yes, I did wear that when I wore ALL neon to their concert when I was in the 3rd grade. I was cool. And just a side-note...the Coca-Cola one has a ruler printed on the inside, haha! Keeping those forever!

Let's play a game called: Which one is different from the others? Just kidding. I don't have a ton of heels. But, I love these! The black stilettos and leopard heels were from my pre-Waylon days, but I'm totally keeping them. And I recently got the tan Bongo loafer-wedges to go with jeans for casual date nights with the hubs. And I had to share my Asics with everyone. They are my favorite walking shoe, definitely the most comfortable of all the shoes I've had before!

Heels are fun, until your toes go numb. Flats are my go-to "dress up this outfit a little" shoe. Um...I just realized they are all from Target. Ha! I need to get out more! The floral shoes were just purchased for my husband's Welcome Home Ceremony! Either those, or the shiny sandals. We shall see what I choose. :)

And honestly, I live in flip-flops! End of story.
